The choice of seal material significantly impacts expansion joint performance and service life. EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer): Temperature range -50C to +150C. Ozone resistance: Excellent. UV resistance: Excellent. Chemical resistance: Good. Compression set: Low. Cost: 20-30% higher than natural rubber. Best for: Coastal environments, industrial zones, extreme temperature climates. Natural Rubber (NR): Temperature range -40C to +80C. Ozone resistance: Poor (requires antiozonant additives). UV resistance: Moderate. Chemical resistance: Limited. Compression set: Moderate. Cost: Lower. Best for: Inland locations, moderate climates, cost-sensitive projects. Recommendation: For most highway bridge applications in temperate climates, EPDM Grade 70 per ASTM D2000 provides the best balance of performance and cost.
