Modular Bridge Expansion Joint Installation Guide: Step-by-Step Process
By Engineering Team

Proper installation is critical for modular expansion joint performance.
Pre-Installation Requirements: Verify joint dimensions match design drawings. Check anchor bolt positions against template. Confirm concrete substrate strength >= C30/37. Ensure joint gap setting matches installation temperature.
Step 1: Substrate Preparation. Break out existing concrete to design depth (typically 200-300mm). Clean substrate by sandblasting or water jetting. Apply bonding agent per manufacturer specification.
Step 2: Joint Positioning. Position joint assembly using crane and alignment jigs. Set gap to installation temperature value. Verify level and alignment with laser level (tolerance +/-2mm).
Step 3: Anchor Bolt Installation. Drill anchor bolt holes to specified diameter and depth. Install anchor bolts with epoxy adhesive. Allow full cure time before loading.
Step 4: Concrete Casting. Form up around joint assembly. Pour rapid-strength concrete (minimum 30 MPa at 24 hours for traffic reopening). Cure for minimum 24 hours before traffic.
Step 5: Quality Control. Verify gap setting at installation temperature. Check level across joint (tolerance +/-3mm). Test waterproofing with water ponding test.
